They write: To date, the most persuasive evidence of the benefits of hatha yoga, and in particular pranayama, stems from research conducted by the National Institute of Mental Health and Neuroscience in India. Yoga for Insomnia PDF Print E-mail

All over the world, people have difficulty doing a consistent morning home practice due to insomnia. And then we are too tired to practice after a long day of work or school. Yoga does help insomnia, but the question is, how? John Friend, the founder of Anusara Yoga, offers the following tips for those of you can't sleep at night:

  • Maintain a regular yoga practice. Try to alternate your sequences—some backbends followed by forwad bends. Backbends are stimulating, while forward bends are calming; practicing forward folds after backbends calms the mind for sleep.
  • Meditation every day is essential. Meditation allows you to delve into a place of peacefulness. Choose a time that is convenient; even if it's just for 10 minutes, the practice will relax the mind.
  • Massage your feet. Massaging feet with sesame or olive oil helps calm the nervous system.
